Although pictures will tell you more than a thousand words, I am sure that the combination of pictures and words is even more convincing. For this reason, I will compare the pictures that I made in 2009 with the pictures I make right now, during my 2013-YFC-visit.

This first picture, believe it or not, is how Youth For Change begun. The school was situated inside the house of Ali Ibrahim, founder of YFC. The classes were held in the hallway right in front of his door to the living room. The hall was divided into two spaces, with me sitting on the right side teaching the so called “older children” to write, count and some basic English words. On the other side of the hall were the younger pupils, who were primarily busy singing and playing.

After this, we moved to a temporal structure. Although still situated next to the house of Ali, this was already a big improvement. During my first time at Youth For Change, we were able to lay a roof on top of it, construct and paint benches, make childproof toys and create a signpost for the school. The building had two classrooms, which were divided this time by some woodwork, although the noise coming from the other side was not stopped by this.

And this is the structure I was confronted with when I arrived at YFC in 2013. This time, the building can finally be called a real school. It coming out of a water pump and a portion of has 6 classrooms, a storage room, an office, a kitchen and toilets for the pupils and staff. Next to this, the pupils can drink fresh water the meals is coming out of the garden; both of which are situated at the compound of the school.

Next to the improvements concerning the building, Youth For Change has grown in various other ways. For instance, the number of children attending class each day has reached an average of 180, coming from only about 20-30 children at the start of the project. This means that the number of students has grown 600% in the past 4 years. If the same growth will continue, Youth For Change is blessed with an average of 1080 students attending class each day in 2017…. It sounds ridiculous right now, but if you would have told me in 2009 the story I am experiencing now, I would have laughed at you.

Furthermore, instead of hiring a taxi to bring the children to school, Youth For Change now owns its own cars. And yes, carS. Two minibuses, so that the children who live in villages furher away can still attend school each day.

Although this project has changed incredibly since 2009, it does not mean that the members of YFC are out of ideas. The construction of a new, permanent school building is already underway, to meet the needs in the future. In this structure, a place will be designed for computer/ICT lessons, so that the students of the future will acquire knowledge needed for the future. Furthermore, there is the wish to own a real school bus, if the number of students will grow even further. And there are even plans of creating a second Youth For Change branch in the northern part of Ghana, which could definitely benefit the project through an exchange of ideas between the two projects.

                                                                                                                                  LEARNERS TODAY, LEADERS TOMORROW
